Milan side put in grave position? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

inter

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'position?' is the definition.
(I know that inter is a more specific form of lay)

'milan side put in grave' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'side' could be 'r' (abbreviation for right) and 'r' is found in the answer.
'in' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'te' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for inter that I've seen before include "Plant" , "team from Italy" , "Bury (or, perhaps, Milan)" , "Place in ground" , "somewhere between ..." .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
