Crossword Genius

Mind-reading Iron Age Romeo gets out of spying (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

espionage

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'spying' is the definition.
(I know that espionage is a type of spying)

'mind-reading iron age' is the wordplay.
'mind reading' becomes 'esp' (I've seen this in another clue).
'iron' becomes 'ion' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'esp'+'ion'+'age'='ESPIONAGE'

'romeo gets out of' acts as a link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for espionage that I've seen before include "seeking information" , "Practice of spying" , "hush-hush work" , "agent's job" , "undercover work" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
