Missing leading edge, fellow ultimately loses Ashes (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

embers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ashes' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'missing leading edge fellow ultimately loses' is the wordplay.
'missing leading edge' means to remove the first letter.
'fellow' becomes 'member'.
'ultimately loses' becomes 's' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'member' with its first letter taken off is 'ember'.
'ember'+'s'='EMBERS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for embers that I've seen before include "Pieces in a dying fire" , "Vestiges of fire" , "Hot fragments of wood or coal" , "Ashes" , "Dying residue of a fire" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
