I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'model' is the definition.
(I know that model can be written as example)

'former partner somewhat bulky?' is the wordplay.
'former partner' becomes 'ex' (an ex-partner).
'somewhat bulky?' becomes 'ample' (I've seen this before. I am not sure about the 'somewhat' bit.).
'ex'+'ample'='EXAMPLE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for example that I've seen before include "Specimen, sample" , "Illustrative case" , "Model - instance" , "Illustration or paradigm" , "Precedent" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
