More than manage to make ends meet, but drink too much (7)
I believe the answer is:
overlap
'drink too much' is the definition.
(to over-lap could be to lap or drink too much)
'more than manage to make ends meet' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'more' could be 'over' (I've seen this before) and 'over' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'lap' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'but' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for overlap that I've seen before include "Imbricate" , "Extend over and cover a part of" , "Flap" , "Partly coincide in time, length etc" , "Extend on top of" .)
