Crossword Genius

Move close, extracting a person beyond help (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

goner

'person beyond help' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'move close extracting a' is the wordplay.
'move' becomes 'go' (to go is to move).
'close' becomes 'near' (similar in meaning).
'extracting' indicates named letters should be taken away.
'near' with 'a' taken away is 'ner'.
'go'+'ner'='GONER'

(Other definitions for goner that I've seen before include "Dead loss" , "I'm late" , "A has-been in distress" , "Someone as good as dead" , "Doomed person" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
