Crossword Genius

Name of consecutive characters leading India (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gandhi

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'leading india' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'name of consecutive characters' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'name' could be 'gan' and 'gan' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gandhi that I've seen before include "Pacifist Indian leader" , "Leader who preached non-violence" , "Indian political and spiritual leader, assassinated 1948" , "Indian political dynasty" , "Leader of Indian independence movement" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
