Naturalist chose bark off tree to achieve success? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

darwin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'naturalist' is the definition.
(Darwin is an example)

'chose bark off tree to achieve success?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'achieve' could be 'win' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'win' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'dar' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for darwin that I've seen before include "Naturalist, author" , "Naturalist with a theory on evolution" , "Strangely inward antipodean city" , "Charles ... who put forward theory of evolution" , "Man of note" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
