I believe the answer is:

aegis

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'protection' is the definition.
(aegis can mean someone's guidance or protection)

'naval area upset about member of us military' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'area' could be 'a' (maths abbreviation) and 'a' is found in the answer.
'us military' could be 'gi' (e.g. 'a GI helmet') and 'gi' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'es' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'offering' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for aegis that I've seen before include "Protection (originally a shield)" , "Protection (of someone)" , "Protection - patronage" , "Custody" , "strong defence" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
