Neglected, and treated with contempt around university (7)
I believe the answer is:
disused
'neglected' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'treated with contempt around university' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'treated' could be 'used' (using is a kind of treating) and 'used' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'dis' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'and' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for disused that I've seen before include "No longer operated" , "No longer of service" , "Idle" , "No longer in action" , "one's no longer employable?" .)
