Crossword Genius

Never amiss around Eastern front (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

veneer

'front' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'never amiss around eastern' is the wordplay.
'amiss' indicates an anagram.
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'eastern' becomes 'e'.
'never' with letters rearranged gives 'vener'.
'vener' going around 'e' is 'VENEER'.

(Other definitions for veneer that I've seen before include "A thin layer on the surface, often wood" , "Thin covering of expensive wood on furniture" , "Superficial polish" , "Thin top layer of decorative wood" , "Thin layer of fine wood covering surface of cheaper wood" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
