Crossword Genius

Newlyweds played bridge by chambers (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bridegrooms

'newlyweds' is the definition.
(bridegroom is a kind of newlywed)

'played bridge by chambers' is the wordplay.
'played' is an anagram indicator.
'by' says to put letters next to each other.
'chambers' becomes 'rooms' (I've seen this in another clue).
'bridge' with letters rearranged gives 'brideg'.
'brideg'+'rooms'='BRIDEGROOMS'

(Another definition for bridegrooms that I've seen is " Men marrying".)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
