Ross

I believe the answer is:

snifters

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'alcoholic beverages' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'nitrogen found in filtering devices' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'nitrogen' could be 'n' (N is the chemical symbol for nitrogen) and 'n' is present in the answer.
'devices' could be 'sifters' (sifter is a kind of device) and 'sifters' is present in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for snifters that I've seen is " Drams".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
