Crossword Genius

No hired transport returning in rasher fashion (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bacon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rasher fashion' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'no hired transport returning' is the wordplay.
'hired transport' becomes 'cab' (cab is a kind of transport. I am not sure about the 'hired' bit.).
'returning' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'no'+'cab'='nocab'
'nocab' backwards is 'BACON'.

'in' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bacon that I've seen before include "successfully brought home" , "Cured back or side of pork" , "The meat to bring home for success" , "Breakfast food" , "Processed pig-meat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
