Crossword Genius

Noise in the distance from pigs (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

farrow

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'noise' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'in the distance from pigs' is the wordplay.
'in the distance' becomes 'far' (I've seen this in another clue).
'from' says to put letters next to each other.
'pigs' becomes 'row' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'far'+'row'='FARROW'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for farrow that I've seen before include "Give birth to piglets" , "Produce piglets" , "pig production" , "A litter of young pigs" , "Little piggies" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
