Nominate Hamlet in the press for classic book (3,8,6)

I believe the answer is:

the pickwick papers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'book' is the definition.
(Charles Dickens novel)

'nominate hamlet in the press for classic' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'hamlet' could be 'wick' (I have seen 'Old hamlet' mean 'wick' so perhaps 'hamlet' could also mean 'wick') and 'wick' is located in the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
'press' could be 'paper' (paper is a kind of press) and 'paper' is found within the answer.
'classic' could be 'epic' (I've seen this before) and 'epic' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for the pickwick papers that I've seen is " Dickens's early success".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
