Crossword Genius

Not an artist producing great works of art? (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

miniaturist

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'art?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'not an artist producing great works' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'an' could be 'i' (Roman numeral for one) and 'i' is located in the answer.
'works' could be 'is' ('be' can be a synonym of 'work') and 'is' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for miniaturist that I've seen is " (Small portrait) painter".)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
