Crossword Genius

Not the ways, we hear, to travel to this island (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rhodes

'this island' is the definition.
(Greek island)

'not the ways we hear to travel' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'not' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is present in the answer.
'ways' could be 'es' (east and south - two directions) and 'es' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for rhodes that I've seen before include "Hordes visit the Greek island" , "Shored (anag) - Greek island" , "British financier and coloniser in southern Africa, d. 1902" , "Hordes go to the Greek island" , "Greek island - British-born South African statesman" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
