Ross

I believe the answer is:

stradivarius

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'instrument maker' is the definition.
'stradivarius' can be an answer for 'instrument' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'maker' bit.

'note in sitar playing sounded different' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'note' could be 'd' (musical note) and 'd' is present in the answer.
an anagram of 'sitar' is 'strai' which is within the remaining letters.
'playing' could be 'v' ('playing' can mean 'versus' in sports) and 'v' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'arius' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stradivarius that I've seen before include "An expensive fiddle!" , "Prized maker of stringed instruments" , "Violin-maker" , "Famous make of stringed instrument" , "Pupil of Amati" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
