Crossword Genius

Nothing remaining from fire around very cold part of year (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

november

'cold part of year' is the definition.
(November is a winter month)

'nothing remaining from fire around very' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'nothing' could be 'no' (similar in meaning) and 'no' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found in the answer.
'very' could be 'v' (abbreviation) and 'v' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for november that I've seen before include "'N' in the phonetic alphabet" , "bit of a fall" , "Never mob (anag.)" , "Thirty days hath September, April, June and . . . . . . . ." , "Armistice month" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
