Oblivious to what the date might be (5)

I believe the answer is:
blind
'oblivious to' is the definition.
(synonyms)
'the date might be' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'date' could be 'd' (abbreviation e.g. dob - date of birth) and 'd' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'blin' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'what' is the link.

(Other definitions for blind that I've seen before include "without a way out" , "Unobserving" , "cover-up" , "deception" , "Drive very fast" .)
