Crossword Genius

Odds of line bracketed by a poet being about an explorer (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stanley

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'explorer' is the definition.
(I know that Stanley is a explorer)

'odds of line bracketed by a poet being about an' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'line' could be 'ley' (as in ley lines) and 'ley' is found within the answer.
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'st' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stanley that I've seen before include "island capital" , "African explorer; Falklands town" , "He found Livingstone" , "Falkland Islands city" , "Falklands capital; --- Baldwin, PM" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
