Crossword Genius

Old man with a short stride and stick (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

paste

'stick' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'old man with a short stride' is the wordplay.
'old man' becomes 'pa' (both can mean father).
'with' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'a short' means to remove the last letter.
'stride' becomes 'step' ('step' can be a synonym of 'stride').
'step' with its final letter removed is 'ste'.
'pa'+'ste'='PASTE'

'and' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for paste that I've seen before include "not real rock" , "Thoroughly beat" , "Watery adhesive" , "foie gras" , "Hit" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
