I believe the answer is:
ready for bed
'on' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'verge of retirement?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is located in the answer.
'retirement?' could be 'bed' and 'bed' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
