Crossword Genius

One begged for a repeat (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pardon

'repeat' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with communicating as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

I cannot understand how the rest of the clue works.

(Other definitions for pardon that I've seen before include "Forgiveness for an offence" , "Forgive (an error)" , "indulgence" , "Polite expression of regret, please excuse" , "Forgive the polite interruption" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
