I believe the answer is:

onion

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cause of tears?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'one between legs' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'between' is an insertion indicator.
'legs' becomes 'on on' ('on' can mean the leg side in cricket).
'i' put within 'onon' is 'ONION'.

'potential' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for onion that I've seen before include "Pungent vegetable" , "it can bring tears" , "Bulbous vegetable" , "veggie" , "Pungent edible bulb of the lily family" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun, The Telegraph and The Times.
