Crossword Genius

One carriage ends tied and frozen in (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

icebound

'frozen in' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'one carriage ends tied' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'I' (Roman numeral).
'ends' means to remove the middle letters.
'tied' becomes 'bound' ('bind' can be a synonym of 'tie').
'carriage' with its centre taken out is 'ce'.
'i'+'ce'+'bound'='ICEBOUND'

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for icebound that I've seen before include "Trapped by frozen sea" , "Locked in by frozen water" , "trapped by wintry conditions" , "(Of ship) trapped by frozen water" , "Stuck in frozen water" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
