Crossword Genius

One carries clubs around for priest, say (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

caddie

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'priest say' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'one carries clubs around for' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'carries' indicates putting letters inside.
'clubs' becomes 'c' (abbreviation in card games).
'around' is a reversal indicator.
'for' becomes 'edda' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'edda' reversed gives 'adde'.
'c'+'adde'='cadde'
'i' inserted into 'cadde' is 'CADDIE'.

(Other definitions for caddie that I've seen before include "Golfing assistant" , "Assistant to carry the golf clubs" , "Golfer's aide" , "Golfer's assistant on course" , "Golfer's attendant" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
