Crossword Genius

One given pound, apparently indebted, angered (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

riled

'angered' is the definition.
(to rile someone up is to make them angry)

'one given pound apparently indebted' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is present in the answer.
'pound' could be 'l' and 'l' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'red' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for riled that I've seen before include "Irritated, provoked" , "Annoyed" , "Vexed" , "Made angry" , "Cross" .)
