I believe the answer is:

summer

'the season' is the definition.
(summer is a season)

'one lowering themselves socially has not left' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one' could be 'me' (a setter might use 'one' to humourously mean 'me') and 'me' is present in the answer.
'not left' could be 'r' (abbreviation for right) and 'r' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'sum' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for summer that I've seen before include "Hot season" , "peak period?" , "Beam" , "warm spell" , "Late singer" .)
