Crossword Genius

One puts clothes on sideboard (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dresser

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sideboard' is the definition.
(I know that sideboard can be written as dresser)

'one puts clothes' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'clothes' could be 'dress' (dress is a kind of clothes) and 'dress' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'on' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dresser that I've seen before include "Surgeon's assistant" , "Sideboard with shelves on top" , "Cabinet with shelves" , "Person who puts clothes" , "medical student" .)
