One side of head's place of worship (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

temple

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'place of worship' is the definition.
(temple is a kind of place of worship)

'one side of head's' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'side' could be 'l' (abbreviation for left) and 'l' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tempe' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for temple that I've seen before include "Once an archbishop" , "Part of the forehead and place of worship" , "Side of head or sacred building" , "London lawyers' church" , "House of prayer" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
