Crossword Genius

One takes steps to destroy them (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pests

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'one takes' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'steps to destroy them' is the wordplay.
'steps' anagrams to 'PESTS'.
However, I am unsure how the anagram is indicated.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pests that I've seen before include "Take steps to troublesome animal." , "Steps (anag.)" , "Steps taken about nuisances" , "Persistently annoying persons" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
