Crossword Genius

One very virtuous, sporting pair? (5,3,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

goody two shoes

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'one' is the definition.
I don't know anything about this answer so I can't judge whether this works.

'virtuous sporting pair?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'virtuous' could be 'good' (associated in meaning) and 'good' is found within the answer.
'pair?' could be 'two' (a pair means two of something) and 'two' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'very' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for goody two shoes that I've seen before include "Smugly virtuous type" , "nursery tale - with 1a" , "Excessively virtuous person" , "Dot's gooey show? (anag)" , "Prim and proper virtuous type" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
