One who survives embracing political party that bombed (9)

I believe the answer is:
lancaster
'one who survives' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.
'embracing political party that bombed' is the wordplay.
'embracing' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'political party' becomes 'ANC' (African National Congress, South African party).
'that bombed' becomes 'laster' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'anc' put inside 'laster' is 'LANCASTER'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for lancaster that I've seen before include "WW2 aircraft; city" , "English royal dynasty - WWII bomber" , "A rose-red city" , "City of NW England" , "city on the Lune" .)
