Ross

I believe the answer is:

merely

'only' is the definition.
(merely can mean only or simply)

'impel odd characters to leave bank' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'bank' could be 'rely' (to bank on something is to rely on it) and 'rely' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'me' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for merely that I've seen before include "Simply - only" , "'Only, and nothing more (6)'" , "Just one" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
