Opening move in place for canvassers? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

doorstep

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'place for canvassers?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'opening move' is the wordplay.
'opening' becomes 'door'.
'move' becomes 'step' (step is a kind of move**).
'door'+'step'='DOORSTEP'

'in' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for doorstep that I've seen before include "Try some canvassing" , "Torpedos (anag.)" , "sliced bread" , "chunk of bread" , "Go from house to house" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
