'oppose' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with fundamental existence as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'daughter being seen with stockbroker?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'daughter' could be 'd' (genealogical abbreviation) and 'd' is present in the answer.
'being' could be 'bear' (bear is a kind of being) and 'bear' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for beard that I've seen before include "Facial feature" , "Oppose with effrontery" , "Boldly confront (formidable opponent)" , "Goatee, for instance" , "Facial hair" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
