Crossword Genius

Order McDonald’s, along with a drink that’s reduced (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

mandate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'order' is the definition.
(I know that mandate is a more specific form of the action order)

'mcdonald's along with a drink that's reduced' is the wordplay.
'mcdonald's' becomes 'M' (fast food franchise known for its yellow M logo).
'along' becomes 'date' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'a drink' becomes 'can' (eg a can of beer).
'that's reduced' means to remove the first letter.
'can' with its first letter taken away is 'an'.
'date' put after 'an' is 'andate'.
'm'+'andate'='MANDATE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for mandate that I've seen before include "Authority for action" , "Order - charge" , "directive" , "Authority to act" , "Official command; commission" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
