Crossword Genius

Order selection by artist from the East (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

arrange

'order' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'selection by artist from the east' is the wordplay.
'selection' becomes 'range' (I've seen this before**).
'by' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'artist' becomes 'ra' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts).
'from the east' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'ra' back-to-front is 'ar'.
'range' put after 'ar' is 'ARRANGE'.

(Other definitions for arrange that I've seen before include "Order, plan or design" , "Put in neat order" , "Fix" , "Settle, work out" , "position" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
