Ordinary language appeared elevated on page (5)
I believe the answer is:
prose
'ordinary language' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'appeared elevated on page' is the wordplay.
'appeared elevated' becomes 'rose' (to rise is to become elevated).
'on' says to put letters next to each other.
'page' becomes 'p'.
'rose' put after 'p' is 'PROSE'.
(Other definitions for prose that I've seen before include "Ropes (anag.)" , "Ordinary writing" , "Normal written language" , "Literary genre" , "Gossipy talker" .)
