Crossword Genius

Outcome of shell bursts (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hatch

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'outcome' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'shell bursts' is the second definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hatch that I've seen before include "Movable cover on ship's deck - batten it down" , "Deck opening; (egg) open" , "Trapdoor cover" , "Emerge from shell" , "Of young bird or fish, emerge from egg" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
