Crossword Genius

Outlaw high speed on busy road (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

desperado

'outlaw' is the definition.
(I know that Desperado is a type of outlaw)

'high speed on busy road' is the wordplay.
'high' indicates an anagram (can mean drunk or on drugs and hence disordered).
'on' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'busy' is an anagram indicator.
'speed' is an anagram of 'despe'.
'road' with letters rearranged gives 'rado'.
'despe'+'rado'='DESPERADO'

(Other definitions for desperado that I've seen before include "Bold outlaw on the American frontier" , "Reckless person" , "reckless type" , "Bandit, outlaw" , "reckless one" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
