Crossword Genius

Paint the Irish one (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tempera

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'paint' is the definition.
(type of paint)

'irish one' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'a' (a thing is one thing) and 'a' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'temper' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tempera that I've seen before include "Artist's emulsion" , "Type of paint" , "Method of drawing" , "A paint and a painting technique" , "Means of painting - pet mare (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
