Crossword Genius

Part of a typewriter to cover with thin metal bearing (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

platen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'part of a typewriter' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'with thin metal bearing' is the wordplay.
'with thin' becomes 'plat' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'metal' becomes 'E' (E is an example).
'bearing' becomes 'N' (north is a compass bearing).
'plat'+'e'+'n'='PLATEN'

'to cover' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for platen that I've seen before include "One working in the press" , "Roller against which typewriter keys strike - ten lap (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
