Crossword Genius

Part of boot from West? (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

toe

'part of boot' is the definition.
(part of a shoe covering one's toes)

'from west?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'te' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for toe that I've seen before include "Extremity of the body" , "Lower tip of something" , "One's nailed" , "Calabria?" , "Lower digit" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
