Crossword Genius

Part of race abandoned, which is right for spectators (5,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stage left

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'right for spectators' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'part of race abandoned' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'part' could be 'stage' (I have seen 'Part of journey ' mean 'stage' so perhaps 'part' could also mean 'stage') and 'stage' is located in the answer.
'abandoned' could be 'left' (leave can mean to abandon) and 'left' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'which is' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stage left that I've seen before include "actors direction" , "One side of a theatre" , "on the prompt side" , "Coach once departed" , "right to the house" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
