Crossword Genius

Party in Australia and America both followed the Chinese lead (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

caucus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'party' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'australia and america both followed the chinese lead' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'australia' could be 'au' and 'au' is located in the answer.
'america' could be 'us' (United States) and 'us' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for caucus that I've seen before include "Small group of like-minded politicians" , "Political gathering to select a candidate, US-style" , "Meeting to select a political candidate in the US" , "Closed political meeting" , "Group with shared concerns within a political party" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
