Peaks when breaking record? Just the opposite (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

alps

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'peaks' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'when breaking record? just the opposite' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'record?' could be 'lp' (LP is an example) and 'lp' is found within the answer.
'when' could be 'as' and 'as' is located in the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for alps that I've seen before include "Slap (anag.)" , "Mountains in Central Europe" , "Slopes" , "Swiss mountains" , "high areas" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
