Crossword Genius

Peg and I obtained starting price first (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spigot

'peg' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'i obtained starting price first' is the wordplay.
'obtained' becomes 'got' ('get' can be a synonym of 'obtain').
'starting price' becomes 'sp'.
'first' says to put letters next to each other.
'i'+'got'='igot'
'igot' put after 'sp' is 'SPIGOT'.

'and' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for spigot that I've seen before include "Plug - an American tap" , "Plug for a cask's vent hole" , "Small peg or plug" , "Vent hole peg - US tap" , "Got sip? (Anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
